Thoughts on Tiny Furniture (2010)
Do you hear that ticking sound?
a character study on a very specific kind of person + an exploration of the emotionally stunted and hopelessly vapid and the effects of living in a bubble
Dunham captures the limited worldview of the inane and insufferable with a sobering frankness, poking fun at the self-absorbed casualness born from a culture that nurtures and inflates egocentrics
every character seems to operate off of a bizarre self-interest, thinking themselves brilliant but we as the viewer can recognise how pathetic they are, a endless feedback loop of self-made problems and shirked responsibilities
chairs and footstools serve as respite from the efforts of the day, but tiny furniture holds no purpose. It carries only the image and idea of furniture but none of the function. It is a thoughtless simulacrum to pander to others to ogle at from their own studio apartments in between bites of cheese and sips of wine, an exercise in obliviousness
sort of funny that this is semi-autobiographical in that respect
I can still hear it.
Yeah, but only a little bit, right?
